Empowering Detection Teams Through Science and Community

Why We Do This

Because HRD Handlers deserve better—better tools, a better Community, and better ways to learn and grow. We understand how isolating and costly this work can be, but we also know how deeply rewarding it is when we get it right.

That’s why we pour our passion into creating science-driven tools, ThinkTank-style collaborations, and a space where we rise together.

This isn’t just training—it’s a calling.

This work found us, and we’re here to honor it. Fueled by a love of learning, an obsession with dogs, and a belief in the power of connection, we’re building a movement where Handlers and their dogs push boundaries, redefine success, and achieve greatness.

About Me: A Calling to Lead, Learn, and Build a Community That Thrives

April 13, 20253 min read

Creating momentum where there’s been frustration. Helping you find your way, not someone else’s. Building trust, confidence, and progress that lasts - that’s what being a Catalyst is about:

Since I was a kid, I’ve been drawn to the deep connection between humans and dogs—it’s more than a bond; it’s a responsibility. Dogs bring us their best, so it’s only right that we show up for them with intention, heart, and the tools to succeed.

I’m Janie Merickel, the founder of Dog Merickel and the driving force behind The Society For Dogs—where Handlers and their dogs don’t just train; they level up.

Why I Do This Work

Let’s be honest: working in this space can feel isolating, expensive, and downright frustrating. I’ve been there. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be that way.

Handlers deserve better—better tools, better leadership, and a Community that’s got their back. That’s why I’ve built science-driven resources, hands-on learning spaces, and a platform where Handlers rise together, not alone.

This isn’t just “work” for me—it’s who I am. Every day, I show up fueled by my love of learning, my dedication to dogs, and my belief that connection and collaboration make the impossible possible.

The Dog Merickel Purpose

At Dog Merickel and The Society For Dogs, we’re not here for cookie-cutter training or surface-level progress. We believe in doing the hard work—the work that builds trust, patience, and results that last.

Our Community is grounded in three things:

  1. Purpose—Helping every Handler uncover their unique path.

  2. Compassion—Meeting challenges with patience and grace.

  3. Learning—Because there’s no end to getting better.

This isn’t just about training your dog; it’s about showing up for yourself and for them. The small wins, the breakthroughs, the ah-ha moments—that’s where the real growth happens.

What We Believe

  • Every Handler has potential. Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned pro, we’ll help you tap into it.

  • Success takes intention. Showing up with clarity and trust is half the battle.

  • Community is everything. This isn’t a solo sport. We grow better, stronger, and smarter together.

We focus on both the big picture and the tiny, game-changing moments:

  • Sharing fresh ideas that challenge the status quo.

  • Hosting Coffee Chats that spark connection and confidence.

  • Creating tools, like OdorQuest, that help you stop guessing and start winning.

This Is a Movement

I didn’t create Dog Merickel and The Society For Dogs to play small. We’re here to push boundaries, set higher standards, and build a Community where Handlers and their dogs can thrive—not just get by.

We’re not just training dogs; we’re building teams. We’re challenging norms. And we’re proving that with courage, trust, and a whole lot of consistency, you and your dog can do more than you thought possible.

Ready to step up? I thought so.

Join us. Because greatness isn’t reserved for the lucky—it’s earned by the ones willing to show up and do the work.

Lead with courage, grow with wisdom, and let our dogs guide us to a greater purpose.

With enthusiasm (and a little sass),
