Our Approach

Founder, Trainer, Advocate

Hi, I’m Janie, the heart and mind behind Dog Merickel. With nearly 20 years of experience in training and certifying Search and Rescue Dogs, I’ve dedicated my career to elevating detection work. My journey began in the high mountains of Colorado with an avalanche dog and has grown into a lifelong passion for creating better tools, systems, and communities for HRD Handlers.

I hold certifications from the Karen Pryor Academy and the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, and I bring an MBA’s strategic perspective to everything I do. But more than titles, I bring heart—I’m driven by the incredible partnership between humans and dogs and by the chance to make a difference in our field.

My Why

Why I Do This

Because HRD Handlers deserve better. I’m here to create a Community where we rise together, armed with better tools, bold ideas, and the belief that our work changes lives. This isn’t just training—it’s a movement.

Fueled by Passion

Dogs and humans share a bondI’ve been hooked on since childhood. Every day, I show up ready to learn, lead, and help teams push boundaries. Watching Handlers and dogs thrive fuels everything I do.

What Drives Me

Honesty, curiosity, and doing things the right way are my foundation. I live for connection, collaboration, and empowering teams to grow with intention and heart. This is more than work—it’s a way of life.

Dreaming Big

I’m here to create tools that inspire, Communities that empower, and a movement that redefines success. Together, we’re not just training dogs—we’re setting new standards and achieving greatness.
