Let’s address the elephant in the room: Don’t fear the training plan!

Many of us hesitate to create training plans because we’re afraid we won’t meet the goals. Others might struggle simply because they don’t know what to write. Or perhaps, deep down, we don’t value the idea of planning enough to commit to it. After all, if it doesn’t seem to matter, why bother?

But let me challenge that.

Think about your daily life. You might not journal, but chances are you use “to-do” lists. We love writing down tasks, checking them off, and feeling accomplished. It’s a simple system, but it works. So why not apply that same logic to your dog training?

A Simple “To-Do” for Dog Training

Creating intentional plans for your training doesn’t need to be overwhelming. It can be as simple as breaking it down into manageable, actionable steps. That’s where the 6-Step Training Plan comes in. It’s a practical framework designed to guide you in creating thoughtful, goal-driven sessions for both you and your dog. Let’s dive in:

The 6-Step Training Plan

1. Goal for the Dog

2. Start with the end in mind: What is the desired result for your dog? Maybe it’s recognizing a specific odor or perfecting a search behavior. Define it.

3. Plan for the Dog

4. Next, map out the details. What will the training session look like? Where will it happen? How will you ensure success?

5. Goal for the Handler

6. Now, turn the lens on yourself. What do you want to achieve? Are you focusing on your timing, leash handling, or body positioning? Identify your role in the plan.

7. Plan for the Handler

8. Break it down into actionable steps. What exactly will you do during the session? Write out the sequence so you’re prepared to execute.

9. Train the Handler

10. Be ready for the unexpected. This step is all about your “if-then” scenarios. For example: If my dog gets distracted, then I’ll bring them back with a reset. Anticipating challenges helps you stay calm and effective.

11. Train the Dog

12. Finally, it’s go time! With all the pieces in place, you’re ready to train. And here’s the best part—because you’ve thought everything through, your session is set up for success.

By following these six steps, you’ll create clarity for both yourself and your dog. Even if life gets busy, this system ensures you stay on track. It’s simple, effective, and easy to implement.
